5 expert hacks to get back into exercise!

Fear creeps in when you think about just how unfit and completely uncoordinated you are. To make it worse, you haven’t exercised in a really long time! The feeling and thoughts we allow to impact us can outweigh and hinder us from even starting. So I’ve put together my 5 hacks to get back into exercise and get your body moving again.

  1. Do what you like

Ask yourself: “What do I like?” “What don’t I like?”…and then start researching what’s available in your area. You’ll be surprised what you’ll find now you know what you’re looking for.

  1. You need to feel comfortable

If you don’t feel comfortable, you will give up. It’s a fact that if you don’t like something then you’re not going to enjoy it so why keep going?

Just because you know you need to exercise and even if you want to exercise, doesn’t mean you should sign up. If you’re not going to feel comfortable then don’t choose it. Remember hack number one, do what you like.

  1. Set short term and long term goals

Setting goals is so important because it gives you something to work towards. If you don’t know what they are right now, think about what’s achievable.

Make them realistic by writing them down. Stick them somewhere you can see them and give them a future date. Know exactly what you want to achieve in the short term that will ultimately add up to that bigger goal.

  1. Start with a friend

Everything is always better in pairs, right? So why not start your new-found fitness journey with a friend. The support, accountability, and motivation you’ll provide each other can really deliver on results, for both of you.

There’s nothing like a bit of healthy competition as well to push you that little bit further.

  1. Be kind to yourself

No one starts back at exercise already fit. Remember you’re just starting back on your fitness journey, or maybe for the first time ever, so be kind to yourself. Lower your expectations and don’t even think about comparing your journey to any other, even your younger self.

This is your journey, right now, and it’s about what works, and what doesn’t work for you, and only you. So instead of negatively thinking you’re no good when you start, I want you to keep this quote top of mind:

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great” – Zig Zaglar

Getting back into exercise when we haven’t exercised for ages doesn’t have to be a harrowing experience. So don’t hold back on taking those steps forward and getting started again.

We’re all very good at finding reasons to say ‘no’ in life, but our health should always be a ‘yes’. Wellbeing is a byproduct of having energy, enjoying life and feeling good about ourselves and we often don’t give it enough priority.

The key is to do what you enjoy, be comfortable doing it, set your goals so you have something to work towards and be kind to yourself. These hacks will guide you back into a fitter, healthier and happier you.
