Exploring the Fernleigh Track

Once joining the cities of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle by rail, the Fernleigh Track now offers both communities a back-to-nature journey. Come with us as we explore the various coastal habitats, our rail heritage, the five sections of the track, and what you’ll experience along the way. Start at Belmont, or if you want to include the section from Blacksmiths to Belmont, read about the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track section.

1. Belmont to Jewells

Railway Parade, Belmont

This 3.3km stretch begins at Belmont where the old rail platform once stood. A great flat section for kids to enjoy on their scooters. Explore the wetlands forest, a 200m timber boardwalk over the swamp, and the 9 Mile Beach sand dunes. At Belmont, you’ll find a drinking fountain, and parking.

2. Jewells to Redhead

Wommara Ave/Kalaroo Road, Jewells

This section covers 2.4km through native coastal heath. Discover the old Redhead station separating the north and south traffic on the track. Learn about each section of the track and the people who worked on the rail. Definitely worth stopping and soaking in the past. There’s a drinking fountain at Jewells and parking.

3. Redhead to Whitebridge

Cowlishaw Street, Redhead

Check out the awesome ocean view as the track climbs up to the old Whitebridge station. Enjoy all the habitat of the Awabakal Reserve on this stunning 4km stretch. You’ll find toilets at the soccer grounds, and at the track entry point, there’s parking and a drinking fountain.

4. Whitebridge to Kahibah

Station Street, Whitebridge

The following 2km of the track is where you’ll experience Glenrock State Conservation Area. This part of the track flows through the coastal rainforest. Listen out for the songs of local birds. At the Whitebridge entry point, you’ll find parking and a drinking fountain. Once you reach the old Whitebridge station, there’s a public toilet as well.

5. Kahibah to Adamstown

Burwood Road, Kahibah

Covering 3.6km, this next section of the track is a highlight. Crossing Flaggy Creek, as well as Little Flaggy Creek, there’s plenty of wildlife to hear and see. Then, under the Pacific Hwy, you’ll venture into a 181m disused railway tunnel, which is a big hit with the kids. Adamstown end has a drinking fountain and parking.
