Pack your kids in the car and head to Blue Gum Hills Regional Park in Minmi. You’ll find walking trails, a maze, BBQ’s and picnic tables as well as Treetops Newcastle. With so many different activities your family can enjoy, all in one place, prepare for an adventurous day.
Getting to Blue Gum Hills Regional Park
Toilet facilities, car parking, undercover picnic tables and BBQs are near the playground. The park is located in the suburb of Minmi and is relatively easy to find. Click on the map below to plan your visit.
Nature Playground
The playground caters for younger children. Discover the wombats in their burrow. Mine the sand and send it along the belt. Balance on the logs, cross the bridges and over the stepping stones. Don’t forget to stop and enjoy a swing.
The maze next to the playground makes a perfect spot for hide n seek. Get lost and then find your way out again. The maze walls are high enough to make this an adventure but parents can stand outside and direct any lost children out!
Heritage Walking Track
Blue Gum Hills was once part of our mining history and you can still find evidence of that along the Heritage Walking Track. Discover remains of a stone bridge abutment from the 1870s and the stone chimney of a ventilation shaft. Nature is reclaiming this area so the features are ever changing. You may see goannas basking in the sunlight. You’ll surely hear bird songs as you watch them flit between the trees. The Heritage Walking Track lasts 3km and takes between 30 minutes and an hour.
Minmi Cemetery Track
This track goes for 1 km and takes about 15 to 30 minutes. Make sure you visit the cemetery along the way. It’s a historic site that dates back to the mining boom of the mid-1800s, telling a story about the people who made this area home over the last 200 years. This walk will take you across a bridge as you enjoy all that nature has to offer. Don’t forget to visit the Minmi Heritage Garden while you’re here.
