Create your own Santa Rock Collection this Christmas!

There’s only one Santa, as we all know, but when it comes to Christmas crafts, a little creative licence goes a long way. Adding your own twist makes every project feel more personal and full of festive cheer. Imagine the entry to your home lined with Santa-inspired art, welcoming guests with colour and joy. Why not try your hand at some Santa art this Christmas? It’s just one of many fun and easy Christmas rock painting ideas to bring the holiday spirit to life!

What You’ll Need

You don’t need much for this fun little project. We kept it simple and used supplies we already had on hand. The stones came from Bunnings and were super affordable, making this an easy craft to pull together.

Supplies:

  • Paint: red, yellow, black, and white
  • Bunnings Stones: choose flat, coarse ones — the paint sticks much better than on shiny rocks
  • Paintbrushes: a few different sizes will help with details

Painting your Christmas rocks

Start by mixing white with a touch of yellow and red until you achieve a natural “skin” colour. Apply this as the base layer on your rock. You’ll likely need a few coats, allowing each one to dry before adding the next, until the colour is solid and even. The exact number of coats will depend on your paint quality. For best results, use a round brush rather than a flat-edged one, as it allows you to apply the paint more thickly and smoothly.

Next, add a layer of white for Santa’s beard and the rim of his hat. Like the base layer, you’ll likely need a few coats to achieve a solid, even finish. Once the white is completely dry, it’s time to mix the colour for the hat. We opted for a rich, dark red by adding just a tiny drop of black to red paint. A simple trick that lets you create a variety of Santas, each with its own unique look for your collection.

Finish your Santa by adding a white pompom to the tip of his hat, then paint on black eyes and a red nose. To make your collection even more special, try adding little variations to each hat. Maybe a swirl, stripe, or extra detail. We can’t wait to display ours in the garden, lining the path to the front door.
