A slice of coastal perfection awaits, at Tomaree Coastal Walk. This coastal walk stretches 27 kilometres, from Tomaree Head in Shoal Bay to Birubi Point in Anna Bay. We ventured along a section between One Mile Beach and Boat Harbour covering 2.5 kilometres, or 5km return. It took us about 2.5 hours including plenty of stops to take photos. This walk will give you a glimpse of family-friendly adventures you can explore.
Getting to One Mile Beach
We started at One Mile Beach, a beautiful place for families. From Lake Mac, the drive takes just over an hour to One Mile in Port Stephens. Follow the signs to One Mile Beach. If you head to Ingenia Holidays One Mile Beach, there is a car park behind it for the beach. There is a cafe & kiosk here as well. One Mile Beach is patrolled 7 days a week throughout the year making it a perfect spot to start and end your journey. You’ll love doing the walk and then returning for a swim or surf in the ocean.
Getting started
Get started up the stone steps on the right-hand side of the beach, close to the life-saving tower. Follow the path at all times keeping the ocean on your left-hand side. Experience fantastic views over One Mile as you walk through the trees up to the headland.
The coastal headland experience
This walk covers all terrains. At times you’ll be walking on dirt, other times on sand through coastal heathland. You’ll cross a rocky platform as you walk around headlands. At points, you’ll find man-made bridges to help you cross safely.
Watch the ocean pounding against the cliffs at Slot Canyon Lookout. There’s a bench just behind it where you can stop to enjoy the view. Look down between the cliffs to marvel at the natural beauty.
Expect the unexpected
Get ready to be nimble on your feet as you cross a rocky pathway, leading around the headland. The views of the harbour are breathtaking and well worth the effort. We continued until we crossed a final bridge taking us to a pathway with a large sign stating Tomaree National Park, but you can go further if you like. Just remember, you have to walk back!
Being prepared
- This walk is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

- You’ll need mossie spray, sunscreen, hats and water for your journey.
- Don’t attempt this walk in a pair of thongs! Make sure you take walking shoes.
- We’d suggest doing this walk early morning or on cooler days, as it’s not shaded.
