Explore the Glendale to Wallsend Tramway Track with us!

Birdsong swiftly replaced the roar of traffic as we started our walk along the Tramway Track between Wallsend and Glendale. This path provides walkers and cyclists with a traffic-free route between the suburbs. Pass through the tunnel under Newcastle Link Road and take a journey back in time to when trams connected Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.

Start and Finish Points

We entered from Ganney Road in Wallsend and finished at Glendale TAFE on Frederick Street. The walk took about 45 minutes one way. Free kerbside parking is available at both ends. Dogs are welcome on this walk. The path is fully paved, making it suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.

A Walk Through Diverse Landscapes

The path offers a variety of scenery. You start in suburbia, walking past homes, before quickly discovering a more rural feel. Fields with ramshackle buildings, expansive bushland, and towering trees surround you. Walk past a residential aged care home with a large water fountain and see if you can spot the resident water dragons basking in the sun. Keep an eye out for horses, too, though watch your step!

A Fascinating History

The Tramway Track has a rich past. Once part of Newcastle’s tramway network, the Speers Point line opened in 1912 and closed in 1930. The path’s gentle gradient supported the trams along their journey, and today, the track continues down to the lake. From Glendale, you can walk a further 2.5km to Speers Point.

Walk Details

The Glendale to Wallsend track covers 3.9km with mostly gentle gradients. There is a bench along the way for resting, but no water stations or toilets, and shade can be limited. For more walks in and around Lake Macquarie, check out our family walks section.
