Homeschool in Lake Mac. Registration and guidelines.

Over the past decade, the number of children being homeschooled in NSW has grown dramatically, rising from 3,298 in 2014 to 12,762 in 2024, according to a recent report from the Department of Education. Parents choose this path for many reasons. They may seek an education that adapts to their child’s needs and lets them learn at their own pace. Others like to focus on individual growth, offer a safe environment, and sometimes it simply makes sense when schools are far away.

What is Homeschool?

In NSW, parents can choose to homeschool their children to meet compulsory schooling requirements. This means the parent takes the lead in their child’s education, usually at home. To do this, the child needs to be registered and must live in NSW.

Registering for Homeschool NSW

Guidelines for Home Schooling Registration in NSW help parents understand how to get started with homeschooling. They explain the registration process, the requirements you need to meet, an overview of the NSW curriculum, and where to find more helpful information.

Now with the NSW Department of Education

Homeschooling in NSW is now regulated by the NSW Department of Education, following an announcement from Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Prue Car.

For now, you can still reach the Home Schooling Unit by email at homeschooling@nesa.nsw.edu.au or by phone on 02 9367 8149. Messages will be redirected to the new team.
