Standing proudly since 1854, Nobbys Lighthouse has long guided vessels safely into the Hunter River and remains one of Newcastle’s most treasured landmarks. But the real experience comes when you set out on foot. When was the last time you strolled along Macquarie Pier?
Getting to Nobby’s Lighthouse
Perched at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour, Nobbys Lighthouse and the breakwall walk make for a perfect family outing. Free parking is available at the beginning of the walk, though it can fill up quickly. Before or after your stroll, drop into the Nobbys Beach Pavilion for a coffee, or make use of the nearby public facilities.
Nobbys breakwall walk
The walk begins at Nobbys Beach and stretches about 1 km to the end of the breakwall, taking roughly an hour return. Midway, at Nobbys Head, a fork in the path leads to a steep climb up to Signal Masters Cottage and the lighthouse itself. From here, the sweeping ocean views make it an ideal vantage point for whale watching during migration season. This area is open to the public on weekends, from 8 am to 4 pm, with free entry.
Newcastle Harbour
Continuing along the breakwall, you’ll pass tugboats guiding colossal bulk carriers as they head into port to load coal. Their sheer size is awe-inspiring, and if you’re lucky, you might also spot dolphins frolicking in the waves nearby.
This is a walk where you’ll feel the elements. There’s no shade from the sun, and the wind can be fierce. Immersing you in the coastal landscape.
Newcastle attractions
While you’re in Newcastle, pack a picnic and head to Fort Scratchley, or cool off with a swim at the Bogey Hole. Turn it into a full day out by soaking up the spectacular views across the harbour and along the coastline.
