Directions: Speers Point Park to Five Islands Bridge
Park and start your walk at Speers Point Park. From there, head to the back of the Multi-Arts Pavilion (MAP mima) and follow the path around. Continue along the path, then veer left and make your way up onto the Five Islands Bridge, where your walk across Cockle Creek begins.
Crossing the Five Islands Bridge
As you walk across the Five Islands Bridge, you’ll start to appreciate the unique history and character of Cockle Creek. In 1828, an Aboriginal community of around 60 people inhabited the area, long before the landscape we know today took shape. Cockle Creek is the largest creek flowing into Lake Macquarie and was named for the large number of cockle shells once found along its shores. As you cross the bridge, you’ll have the spectacular waters of Cockle Creek on one side. On the other side, the main traffic route serving the western Lake Macquarie community runs alongside.
Booragul Foreshore and the Museum
Follow the signs towards the Museum of Art & Culture, then descend from the bridge towards the Booragul foreshore. The views around this beautiful bay are breathtaking, with the sparkling waters of Lake Macquarie stretching out before you. Continue along the path, then follow the footpath towards the Rowing Club and on towards the Museum. You’ll arrive at one of the most spectacular jetties on Lake Macquarie. Take a moment to walk out onto the jetty, turn around and take it all in. Just magic.
