Speers Point: Playground, park and so much more!

Enjoying prime location on the shore of Lake Macquarie, Speers Point Variety Park is a premier recreation space in Lake Macquarie City. Covering an area of over two hectares, make sure this park is on your list of places to visit. Just a 20-minute walk along the shared pathway from Warners Bay or a 20-minute walk from Booragul. This park will amuse kids of all ages. There is so much on offer and the Speers Point playground should be first on the list.

Directions

Parking is easy with a large car park located on Park Road off The Esplanade at Speers Point. This is a great place to park for the swimming centre, playground and cafe. Head to the car park on Creek Reserve Road off of Five Islands Roundabout for the bike circuit and leash-free dog area.

Speers Point Playground

When you enter this huge, fully fenced children’s playground, your eyes are immediately drawn upwards. The 12-metre high climbing tower stands prominently in the centre of the playground. A spiral slide starts at the top, stretching 9 metres, giving the big kids an exciting slide through its dark tunnel. Two long flying foxes run alongside it.

Bike and scooter circuit

The children’s park is broken up into sections.  Bring your scooters or bikes to ride around the kids’ bike circuit at the rear of the park.  With beautifully paved ‘roads’ made realistic with road signs and traffic cones. There’s even a roundabout and a petrol station. This area is perfect for those on two wheels. There are shaded picnic tables where you can meet up with a friend as your kids play. To the side are a couple of large swings that will seat 3 or 4 kids.

Climbing centre

At the front of the park, there’s a large climbing structure shaped like a fort. Kids will discover sliding poles, slides, netting to climb over, and an abundance of places to allow their imagination to run wild. Located next to this area are monkey bars. You’ll also find music-making equipment such as a large xylophone where your child can experiment with sound.

Water play

There’s a water area so pack a towel and a spare set of clothes. Press the buttons to release water jets, then turn the handle to fill a bucket. Gullies run with water, moving it between different parts of the park. My kids loved this area when they were younger and would always come away soaking wet with huge smiles.

All kids included

An area of the park dedicated to children who need specialised equipment or a quiet space to enjoy themselves. As this park gets busy, it’s valuable to have a spot kids can play in peace.

Host a birthday party or hang out with mates

Choose a grassy spot to lay a picnic rug within the fenced playground. There are also shaded picnic tables and BBQs to enjoy lunch with a group. This park is popular for hosting birthday parties and meeting up with friends. If you have younger kids, be mindful that this park is so large it’s easy for them to be there one minute and gone the next.  Don’t expect to get too much time sitting down!

Enjoy the large European style promenade

Surrounding the children’s playground is a large grassy park that continues along the shoreline of Lake Macquarie. A beautiful large paved promenade runs through the centre. Rollerskaters and skateboarders use this area as it’s a smooth surface. It’s perfect for prams, wheelchairs and most wheels. There are undercover picnic tables all around and free gas BBQs to use.

Speers Point Park Cafe

Located next to the park is Table 1 Espresso. You can enjoy a sit-down meal here or grab a takeaway as you stroll through the park. This is a popular place to grab coffee and something delicious for the kids. The public toilets are located just behind the cafe.

Great to exercise

Speers Point Park is a popular place to exercise. You’ll often see exercise classes in the large park area, and there is workout equipment for you to use along the path. You can cycle from Booragul on the west side of the lake or from Eleebana on the east, so many riders enjoy this route.

Leash-free dog area

If you’re looking for a fenced leash-free dog park you’ll also find that here. Situated behind the park, your dog can socialise with other dogs in a leash-free environment. This fully fenced, 10,000-square-meter space can be accessed via Creek Reserve Road.

Speers Point Swim Centre

Speers Point Swim Centre is located next to the park. The centre has a large outdoor pool, a smaller pool ideal for children, and a water play area perfect for younger kids. If you’re heading to the park in the warm weather, bring your swimmers and a towel to enjoy a swim before heading home.

There is something for everyone at Speers Point Park! Start planning your next trip there with your family and enjoy one of the best parks in Lake Macquarie. Discover more of Lake Mac: Out & About.
