Speers Point: Playground, park and so much more!

Enjoying a prime location on the shore of Lake Macquarie, Speers Point Variety Park is the premier recreation space in Lake Macquarie City. Covering an area of over two hectares make sure this park is on your list of places to visit. Just a 20-minute walk along the shared pathway from Warners Bay or a 20-minute walk from Booragul on the west of the lake. This park will amuse kids of all ages. There is so much on offer and the Speers Point playground should be first on your list.

Parking is easy with a large car park located on Park Road off The Esplanade at Speers Point. This is a great place to park for the swimming centre, playground and cafe. Head to the car park on Creek Reserve Road off of Five Islands Roundabout for the bike circuit and leash-free dog area or if you are shopping at the farmers market.

Speers Point Playground

When you enter this huge fully fenced children’s playground your eyes are immediately drawn upwards. The 12-metre high climbing tower stands prominently in the centre of the playground. A spiral slide comes almost from its top stretching 9 metres giving kids and adults a thrill as they slide through its dark inside.  There are two long flying foxes alongside.

Bike and scooter circuit

The children’s park is broken up into sections.  Bring your scooters or bikes to ride around the kid’s bike circuit at the rear of the park.  With beautifully paved ‘roads’ made realistic with road signs and traffic cones. There’s even a roundabout and a petrol station. This area is perfect for those on two wheels. There are shaded picnic tables here where you can meet up with a friend as your kids play.  To one side are a couple of large swings that will seat 3 or 4 kids.

Climbing centre

At the front of the park, there’s a NEW large climbing structure that is shaped like a fort. There are several sliding poles, slides, netting to climb over, and an abundance of places to allow their imagination to run wild. Located next to this area are monkey bars. You’ll also find music-making equipment such as a large xylophone where your child can experiment with sound.

Water play

There’s a water area so don’t forget to pack a towel and a spare set of clothes. Press the buttons to release jets of water, turn the handle to fill a bucket. Gullies run with water, moving it between different parts of the park. My kids loved this area when they were younger and would always come away soaking wet with huge smiles on their faces.

All kids included

There is also an area of the park that is dedicated to children who need specialised equipment or a quiet space to enjoy themselves in. As this park does get busy it’s really valuable to have a spot they can enjoy in peace.

Host a birthday party or hang out with mates

Within this fully fenced kids park, there are lots of grassy spots to lay down a picnic rug. There are also shaded picnic tables and BBQ’s so you can enjoy a spot of lunch. This park is popular for hosting birthday parties and for meeting up with friends. If you have younger kids, be mindful that this park is so large it’s easy for them to be there one minute and gone the next.  Don’t expect to get too much time sitting down! If you’re looking for a smaller playground close by you can choose Warners Bay instead.

Enjoy the large European style promenade

Surrounding the children’s play park is a large grassy park that goes down to the shoreline of Lake Macquarie. A beautiful large paved promenade was recently built for all to enjoy. You’ll find skaters and skateboarders using this as it is such a smooth surface as well as people strolling to enjoy the view. There are undercover picnic tables dotted all around as well as free gas BBQ’s to use.

Speers Point Park Cafe

Located next to the park is Table 1 Espresso. You can enjoy a sit-down meal here or grab a takeaway to take into the park. This is a popular place to grab a coffee and something for the kids. Just behind the cafe are public toilets.

Great to exercise

This is a popular place for people to exercise. You’ll often see exercise classes in the large park area and there is workout equipment for you to use. Ride your bike here along the paved shared pathway. You can cycle from Booragul on the west side of the lake or from Eleebana on the east.

Leash-free dog area

If you’re looking for a fenced leash-free dog park you’ll also find that here. Situated behind the park you’ll be able to let your dog socialise with other dogs. This is a fully fenced, 10,000-square-meter space that can be accessed via Creek Reserve Road.

Speers Point Swim Centre

Speers Point Swim Centre is located next to the park. The centre a large outdoor pool, a smaller pool that is ideal for children, and a water play area perfect for younger kids. If you’re heading to the park in the warmer weather, make sure you bring your swimmers and a towel so you can enjoy a swim before heading home.

I’m sure you’ll agree that there really is something for everyone at Speers Point Park. Start planning your next trip there with your family and enjoy one of the best parks in Lake Macquarie. Check out more places to visit around Lake Mac here: Out & About.
