Get the kids outside in the garden this week listening to the birds and watching them as they come and go. Discuss and record the types of birds, and identify all our native Australian birds. The kids will love following our birdseed ornaments recipe and hanging them around your garden in the trees where the native birds visit. This recipe is inexpensive to make and easy to assemble, making it perfect for the kids to do together. Plus it’s giving our native birds a little treat at the same time.
Birdseed ornaments recipe
- 2 cups of native birdseed mix
- 4 tablespoons of flour
- 8 tablespoons of water
- 3 teaspoons of golden syrup
You’ll also need
- Drinking straw
- Kitchen twine or string for hanging
- Mixing bowl and spoon
- Tray with parchment paper
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients for the birdseed ornaments recipe together, and then press them out onto a piece of baking paper about 2 cm thick.
- Using a cookie cutter (we used a love heart) cut the birdseed layer and remove the excess from the cutter but leave the cutter in place for a moment.
- Now, using a drinking straw, gently push out a hole at the top then gently remove the cutter. You may need to use your fingers to gently push it into form as well.
- Leave to dry overnight on the baking paper.
- The next day gently flip your ornaments over and let the other side dry.
- When dry, use a length of twine and feed it through the hole you created at the top with the straw.
- Let the kids hang them up where the native birds visit your garden.
