We’re spoilt for choice with family walks in Lake Macquarie. From the bush to the coastal tracks, there are plenty of options to enjoy with your kids. Here are some of our favourites. All of them are different and cater for little kids, as well as big kids. Make sure you visit our Family Walks to explore Lake Mac.
Green Point – Belmont
Green Point Reserve is nestled along the foreshore of Lake Macquarie between the suburbs of Belmont and Valentine. The site covers 152 hectares and is home to a variety of flora and fauna.
It’s an attractive, peaceful place to take the family, have a walk or bike ride, and then relax and enjoy the scenery. The lake views are stunning and provide a beautiful backdrop to the area. This is one of the must-do walking tracks at Lake Macquarie.
About 20 minutes each way to Green Point Reserve or you can go all the way through to Valentine for a longer adventure.

Glenrock Lagoon – Kahibah/Dudley
Glenrock State Conservation Area is the last remaining coastal rainforest in the region. Its natural beauty makes it one of the must-see destinations in the Lake Macquarie area. With access to beaches, waterfalls, woodland, forests, and the possibility of seeing whales, echidnas and birds. Glenrock is a unique place.
If you’re looking for a walk amongst a coastal rainforest, do a Glenrock walk.
Fernleigh Track & Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track
Whether you’re heading out for a walk or a cycle with the family, the Fernleigh Track is a great choice for both. This shared pathway links Lake Macquarie and Newcastle through an old coal rail line.
You’ll travel through Belmont Wetlands, Awabakal Nature Reserve and Glenrock Lagoon on a peaceful family adventure.
Experience local flora and fauna, pass through the old rail tunnel, spot old rail relics, and breathe in the bushland setting.
You can access the Fernleigh Track from numerous places, and the new section of the track called Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track, can be accessed at the back of Belmont Tafe.
Owens Walkway – Redhead
Walk along the boardwalk and weave past Belmont Wetlands to Webb Park Playground.
Many things caught our eye, such as a frilled neck lizard, big mushrooms growing from a log, the paperbark trees, and the swamp between the walkway and the beach.
This walk is about 20 min each way which is perfect for a little family outing to explore the area and see the ducks in the wetlands.

Pirrita Island – Swansea
Pirrita Island was a rich hunting and fishing ground for the Awabakal people. Today, it’s enjoyed by the community as a sanctuary for local birds and an abundance of wildlife.
Boasting a new boardwalk suspended above the tidal changes of the channel, take the kids on an adventure to see the lake from a new perspective. This boardwalk is wheelchair and pram-friendly.
