5 family favourite walking tracks in Lake Macquarie!

There are so many awesome walking tracks in Lake Macquarie you can do with the kids. Here’s 5 we love to do and they’re all a little different. Enjoy!

Green Point, Lake Macquarie

Green Point Reserve is nestled along the foreshore of Lake Macquarie between the suburbs of Belmont and Valentine. The site covers 152 hectares and is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

It’s an attractive, peaceful place to take the family, have a walk or bike ride and then relax enjoying the scenery. The lake views are stunning and provide a beautiful backdrop to the area. This is one of the must-do walking tracks at Lake Macquarie.

About 20 min each way to Green Point Reserve or you can go all the way through to Valentine for a longer adventure.

Glenrock Walk

Glenrock State Conservation Area is the last remaining coastal rainforest in the region. Its natural beauty makes it one of the must-see destinations in the Lake Macquarie area. With access to beaches, waterfalls, woodland, and forest and the possibility of seeing whales, echidnas, and a variety of birds, Glenrock is the perfect place to spend a morning.

If you want to do a walk amongst a coastal rainforest, do a Glenrock walk.

Bushwalking in the Watagans

The Watagans National Park is a jewel in the crown of the ‘extended’ Lake Macquarie area boasting spectacular bushwalking trails, waterfalls and stunning views. If you want to get away from it all and view Lake Macquarie from up high, this is the perfect location. You certainly feel the peace and tranquility of the forest in this remote setting.

In the Lake Macquarie area bushwalking in the Watagans should be high on your list of things to do.

Fernleigh track

Whether you’re heading out for a walk or a cycle with the family, the Fernleigh Track is a great choice for both. This shared pathway links Lake Macquarie and Newcastle via a 15 km route through an old coal rail line.

You’ll travel through Belmont Wetlands, Awabakal Native Reserve as well as Glenrock Lagoon on a peaceful family adventure.

Experience local flora and fauna, passing through the old rail tunnel, spot old rail relics, and breath in the bushland setting.

You can access the Fernleigh Track from numerous places, where car parking is also available. You can walk or cycle for as long as you like, turn around and come back. We love to take the kids for a bike ride at the Belmont end, which was a great spot to teach them how to ride.

Definitely a family-friendly walking spot in Lake Macquarie that needs to be explored.

Owens Walkway Redhead

Take a walk on the boardwalk weaving it’s way past the Belmont Wetlands to Webb Park Playground.

If you park in Cain Street (Duck Pond end) and feed the ducks first it’s a great place to begin.

It’s not a long walk and as we ventured through the reserve we talked about why all the natives were planted to help protect the coast from erosion. Many things caught our eye, such as a frilled neck lizard, big mushrooms growing from a log, the paperbark trees, and the swamp between the walkway and the beach.

We stopped at Webb Park for a play in their new play area, which was perfect for the kids, and they took the opportunity to have some fruit and have a drink while we were there.

About 20 min each way so a perfect little outing for the family to explore and the playground is, of course, a big hit with the kids.
