Lake Macquarie camping: why it’s the perfect holiday for your family

Camping is a perfect excuse to get back to nature, forget about devices and to spend time with your family and friends. Once the tent’s go up, beds are made, chairs unfolded and you have a glass of wine in your hand the holiday begins. Lake Macquarie camping grounds are a must for you to experience.

Lake Macquarie campsites are the perfect spot to spend a long, lazy weekend under canvas. Just 90 minutes north of Sydney, with a saltwater lake that’s more than twice the size of Sydney Harbour and an abundance of beaches, there’s so much to do to while away the days.

Why stay at Lake Macquarie camping grounds?

For the locals, sometimes the best holidays are just half an hour from your front door. If you need to go home and put your garbage bins out or pick up the bottle opener, no worries! The journey home’s a breeze, and let’s face it, none of us looks forward to a long drive.

For visitors, Lake Macquarie offers a wealth of natural wonders for kids of all ages to explore. It’s the perfect holiday for relaxing with friends around a campfire and immersing yourself in that holiday vibe.

Four lakeside camping sites to choose from

There are four camping grounds to choose from on the Lake. One is on the west side of the lake at Wangi Wangi, and the other three are on the east side at Swansea, Blacksmiths and Belmont. All of these campsites offer the perfect opportunity for family camping and if you prefer not to put up a tent they also offer caravan sites and cabins.

Wangi Wangi camping

Wangi Wangi’s located next to the lake on a native flora and fauna reserve. It offers a kid’s playground and winter campfires. With easy access to beautiful walking trails, it’s the perfect place to chill.  Wangi’s is located across the lake opposite the channel at Swansea. There are fantastic fishing spots available either a short walk or a boat ride away.

Relax at Swansea

Swansea’s holiday park is the biggest in the Hunter Region. Boasting 383 sites this is a great place for families and friends to come together and have some fun. This campground is sure to be a winner with your kids.

After a $950,000 update in 2022, this park now features two large waterslides and a mega soaker tipping bucket as well as mini golf, basketball and tennis courts, a kids playground and school holiday activities. Including paths and ramps through the splash park means kids of all abilities can access and have fun.

Just a 20-minute walk into Swansea to cafes and shops makes this a perfect spot to set up your tent. Check out the awesome walk or ride along Swansea channel.

Enjoy the ocean at Blacksmiths

Blacksmiths is just a 200-metre walk from the ocean. It offers you a swimming pool, kids playground, school holiday activities, and the opportunity to take your pet on holiday with you. Close to local shops and restaurants and just a courtesy bus ride from local clubs this holiday accommodation at Lake Macquarie ticks a lot of boxes.

Blacksmiths is located next to the channel that feeds into the lake from the ocean. The break wall that separates the beach from the channel offers many great spots for rock fishing. A nearby boat ramp allows you access to the ocean or to sail into the lake. Families can also enjoy a swim at the secret tidal pool known to the locals as Grannies Pool
